Re-City is an international platform for Social Sustainability launched by Catalunya Europa Foundation that wants to face the great global challenges of today and bring proposals for change and real transformation. It is a project that is born to rethink, replan and react from the cities to the main economic, social and environmental challenges that affect the planet.
We want to make Barcelona a benchmark in the debate and dialogue between the academic, scientific, social, citizen, business and political sectors to provide specific ideas and solutions.

What is Re-City?
Re-City is an international platform for Social Sustainability launched by Catalunya Europa Foundation that wants to face the great global challenges of today and bring proposals for change and real transformation. It is a project that is born to rethink, replan and react from the cities to the main economic, social and environmental challenges that affect the planet.
We want to make Barcelona a benchmark in the debate and dialogue between the academic, scientific, social, citizen, business and political sectors to provide specific ideas and solutions.
What are the challenges?
The Re-City platform began in June 2017 with a cycle of lectures for debate and reflection dedicated to one of the great global challenges: social inequalities. But along with this cycle, which still continues, we have set more challenges for the coming years.
These are the four major challenges of Re-City:
"Fighting inequalities" (2017)
"Facing climate change" (2018)
"For an intercultural future" (2019)
"Technological revolution, social revolution" (2020)
How is it carried out
The objective of Re-City is to reflect, analyze, make proposals, and finally act and pass from the debate of ideas to the reality of the facts and concrete actions.
Each of the challenges includes a cycle with three different phases:
RE-THINK: International meeting to rethink and debate solutions.
RE-PLAN: Creation of instruments to reconsider and specify proposals
RE-ACT: Building a space to react and act locally and internationally.
We reflect on the different problems and difficulties that affect the cities.
Conferences: A series of conferences –which are led by well-known experts who have international prestige– allow us to know the status of the issue in the case of each challenge from multidisciplinary perspectives.
Seminars: Joint work by international experts, scholars and local specialists aimed at identifying the tendencies and the new lines of research for each challenge.
Talks: Celebration of colloquiums with business leaders for the purpose of exploring the limits of consensus and contributing to the promotion of new proposals of change.
Academic Network: Creation of a network of scientists from Catalan universities in order to increase the multidisciplinary collaboration and promote new research spaces for each challenge
We reconsider solutions and create instruments to transfer all the knowledge into the cities.
The Observatory: The creation of a Social Sustainability Observatory aimed at involving the 138 cities of the World Association of the Major Metropolises. This is a tool used to observe, analyse the evolution of the cities in relation to the defined indicators and identify best political practices.
Training Plan: We create a Training Plan addressed to mayors, councillors, and municipal technicians so as to transfer the knowledge and understand the global challenges and their impact on the local sphere.
Moment of doing and acting: we implement the best proposals for each of the challenges and share them.
The municipal area: Presentation of the proposals arisen within the political and local areas in order to incorporate them in the Strategic Metropolitan Plan.
The business area: Transfer the agreed proposals with the business leaders to the economic sector in order to open a new debate and explore the procedures that allow reaching commitments that favour the change.
The international area: Presentation of avant-garde proposals facing global challenges to the international agents and cities in front of the great global challenges.
